It isn’t easy unless you have the right guide, and that guide is in front of you now!
With this step-by-step guide to drawing a deer head in just 6 easy steps, you’ll be recreating this amazing animal in no time.
How to Draw A Deer Head
Step 1
In the introduction to this guide to drawing a deer head, we mentioned that the antlers are one of the most difficult parts to draw. So for this step, we’ll start with one of these horns.
The horns have a central part from which some pointed shapes branch off.
To draw it, we will use curved lines ending in sharp points for the parts sticking out from the central part of the horn.
Step 2
In this second part of your deer head drawing, you will add another horn for the head. This will be almost a mirror image of the one you drew earlier.
However there will be some minor differences, but the structure should be fairly similar.
Once both horns resemble the reference image, you can start drawing the head in the next few steps.
Step 3
Now that the antlers are ready, in this step of our how-to draw a deer head guide, let’s start outlining the head.
First, there are two curved lines between and below the two horns. Next, we use more curved lines for the outlines of the ears, and then there is a sharp shape on the right side of the ear.
Next, we’ll use a few more curved lines for the pointed face, and finally, we’ll use a jagged line for the nape of the neck for the outline.
We will use this jagged line to make the neck furrier. Finally, we’ll add some details for the inside of the face.
This includes some oval shapes for the eyes and some lines on the face to give it more bone structure.
Step 4
In this next step, we will add more to your deer head drawing. First, let’s focus on the deer’s neck and chest.
First, draw more curved, jagged lines along the front of the face and lengthen them more for the back. These, too, help to make the deer nice and furry.
Next, we’ll draw a shape on the deer’s chest to make it look like there’s a tuft of fur there.
We’ll draw this with another jagged line forming a pointed shape pointing toward the chest. With all these drawn, the next step is to start the finishing touches.
Step 5
Your photo looks great, but we will make it look even better with some final touches in this step of our how-to draw a deer head guide.
First, we’ll start with the eyes. They already look spooky, so let’s fix that by filling the eyes with some black.
Next, for the face, you can draw some details for the deer’s nose. You can also add more lines around the nose for more detail.
Next, we’ll add some line detail to the horns to give them more depth.
You can then finish by drawing lots of small lines on the neck and back of the deer’s head to finish it with more hair detail.
We chose these details for our image, but feel free to add some of your own! You could draw the rest of the deer or create an interesting background for some ideas. We are excited to see what you choose!
Step 6
For this sixth and final step of your deer head drawing, we will finish it with some eye-popping colors.
In our reference image, we used some muted browns for the deer, but this is a step where you have fun getting creative with your favorite colors while drawing!
In addition to choosing your colors, you can also experiment with different artistic means. If you use some painting mediums like acrylics and watercolors or work with colored pencils or markers, you will have an incredible picture. Make sure to let your creativity run free and see what happens!
